KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The top two receivers in terms of receptions in Western Michigan history will be together once again as Jamarko Simmons signed a free agent contract with the Green Bay Packers on Sunday night. Simmons surpassed Greg Jennings' single-season and career receptions, and his single-season yards records in 2008.
For so long Simmons has said that it was Greg Jennings that he patterned himself after, looked up to as a younger Bronco and looked towards for advice throughout each of his seasons in the Brown & Gold. The duo will be reunited in Green Bay when mini-camp takes place in a week or so.
The two receivers names are side by side in the WMU record books as the Flint, Mich., native replaced Jennings atop the list for career receptions (260), receptions in a season (104) and yards in a season (1,276). Simmons was earned All-America honors from Sports Illustrated and Phil Steele's College Football following his second-straight season as a First Team All-Mid-American Conference selection.
Simmons came up big in the biggest of stages, setting career highs for receptions with 14 against Indiana and Cincinnati. He had over 100 yards receiving against Florida State (123), West Virginia (144), Indiana (158), Cincinnati (172) and Illinois (174). He had 12 100-yard receiving games in his career, including a personal best of six in 2008.
Simmons is the first former Bronco from the offensive side of the ball to either get drafted or sign a free agent contract this year as former defensive backs Louis Delmas and E.J. Biggers were drafted in the second and seventh rounds, respectively and Londen Fryar signed with Kansas City.
